Best restaurant training platforms (2026)

By Dan MurphyUpdated 4 min read

What are the best training platforms for restaurant staff?

Start with certification: ServSafe covers food handler, manager, allergen and alcohol training. For your own standards, phone-first tools such as Opus and 7shifts Training suit independents, and Trainual turns SOPs into training. Typsy provides ready-made hospitality lessons, and Wisetail and Axonify serve larger brands. Track every certificate's expiry date.

Training platforms help new staff get up to speed quickly and learn the same standards across every shift and location. Certification programs are a separate need: in Massachusetts, the person in charge on every shift must hold allergen awareness training. This list covers both.

How we chose

  • Training platforms and certification providers used by restaurants, checked on their own sites.
  • What each one actually delivers, in its own words.
  • No pricing or ratings.

1.ServSafe

Certification training · Every restaurant

The National Restaurant Association's food handler, manager, allergen and responsible alcohol service training and certification.

Best for: the certifications your staff need regardless of which platform you use for everything else.

Worth knowing: it is certification, not a platform for your own recipes and standards. Check which courses Massachusetts accepts for allergen awareness.

2.Opus

Mobile training platform · Hourly teams

Restaurant training delivered on staff phones, with no-email login and automatic translation into many languages.

Best for: multilingual teams and staff who never sit at a computer.

Worth knowing: you still have to write the content, or pay someone to.

3.7shifts Training

Training inside scheduling · 7shifts users

Turns your SOPs, menus and handbooks into courses inside 7shifts. 7shifts also runs a free online academy for restaurant managers.

Best for: restaurants already on 7shifts.

Worth knowing: check which plan includes it.

4.Trainual

SOP and training manual software · Growing teams

Turns written processes into role-based training, and markets itself to restaurants with roughly 25 to 1,000 employees.

Best for: owners who want the operations manual and training in one place.

Worth knowing: not restaurant-only, and its pricing page lists a one-time implementation fee.

5.Typsy

Hospitality course library · Skills training

A library of more than 2,000 short expert-led hospitality lessons.

Best for: ready-made service, bar and kitchen skills training.

Worth knowing: the content is general, so add your own standards separately.

6.Wisetail

Restaurant LMS · Larger brands

A restaurant learning management and operations platform with multi-language content and digital checklists.

Best for: multi-unit brands building a training program.

Worth knowing: built for larger organizations.

7.Axonify

Microlearning platform · Enterprise

Short, frequent training and compliance lessons for restaurant frontline teams.

Best for: large groups that want to reinforce training over time.

Worth knowing: enterprise-focused.

How to choose

Sort out certifications first, because those are the requirements. Then pick a platform by team size. The phone-first tools suit independents, and an LMS such as Wisetail or Axonify suits larger brands. Record every certificate's expiry date where someone will see it before it lapses.

For paying for training, see the Workforce Training Fund in our Boston resources list.
